Short answer: China’s two largest stainless buyers just cut their August ferrochrome bids by 200 yuan. That lowers the cost base for 430 and 409 coil. If you buy ferritic stainless, this is a good week to lock volume.
What Happened
Two numbers moved this month.
Taigang set its August high-carbon ferrochrome bid at 7,895 yuan per 50-base-ton, delivered and cash-inclusive. Tsingshan set its August contract at 8,095 yuan per 50-base-ton. Both are down 200 yuan from July.
Ferrochrome is the main alloy feed for 400-series stainless. Grade 430 carries about 16–18% chromium. When chrome gets cheaper, 430 gets cheaper to make.

Why It Matters for Buyers
Three things follow.
First, cost. A 200-yuan drop in ferrochrome does not crash coil prices overnight. But it removes upward pressure on 430. Mills that were eyeing a hike may now hold.
Second, timing. Ferrochrome is bought on monthly bids. The August cut signals a soft raw-material picture into Q3. Buyers who wait for “the bottom” usually miss it. Buyers who lock a range capture the saving.
Third, compliance. Cheaper input is not an excuse to skip the mill cert. Keep EN 10204 3.1 on every coil. Your customer’s auditor will ask.
Impact by Product and Region
| Grade | China | East Europe (EAEU) | South America |
|---|---|---|---|
| 201 | Little direct link | Stable | Stable |
| 304 | Linked via nickel, not chrome | Stable | Stable |
| 430 | Cost eases — watch for softer quotes | Stable, cert-driven | Stable, cert-driven |
| 409 | Cost eases with 430 | Stable | Stable |
The drop touches 430 and 409 most. Buyers in East Europe and South America should still insist on full documentation — a cheaper coil with no EN 10204 3.1 is a coil you cannot clear.
What To Do Now
- If you run 430 or 409, ask your mill for a September indication this week.
- Lock a volume band, not a single price. A range protects you both ways.
- Keep the EN 10204 3.1 cert in the package. Always.
- Watch Tsingshan’s next bid. It sets the tone for the whole 400-series.
- Don’t overbuy. This is a cost signal, not a shortage.
